56th Circuit Court and Felony Jurisdiction
The 56th Circuit Court covers Eaton County exclusively. It handles all felony criminal cases, which involve crimes punishable by more than one year in state prison. Once a felony case moves past the preliminary exam in district court, the full trial record is maintained in circuit court. The clerk files and stores all charging documents, court orders, plea agreements, and sentencing records.
Public access to these records is governed by MCR 8.119. You do not need to be a party to the case to request copies. Sealed records, juvenile matters, and cases with protective orders are restricted. The circuit court also handles post-conviction matters like sentencing modifications and certain appeals. All of these records are part of the public file unless a judge has ordered them sealed.
Eaton County is part of the greater Lansing region. The county borders Ingham County, where the state capital is located. Residents from Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, and other communities file felony cases at the 56th Circuit Court.

In Eaton County, two different systems govern criminal records access. Court records from the 56th Circuit Court and the 56A District Court are public under MCR 8.119. You go directly to the clerk. Submit a FOIA request to the agency that made the record. Agencies have 5 business days to respond. Fees under FOIA can include copy charges and labor time for search and retrieval.
