The Michigan Courts homepage at courts.michigan.gov provides statewide court information and links to local courts. MiFILE at mifile.courts.michigan.gov handles e-filing for courts that participate. The Michigan Legal Help site at michiganlegalhelp.org is useful for understanding how to interpret what you find and what your rights are when accessing criminal court records.

FOIA and Court Records: Key Differences

In Michigan, criminal court records are not subject to FOIA. They are governed by MCR 8.119 and must be requested from the court clerk. FOIA under MCL 15.231 applies to public records held by government agencies such as police departments, county agencies, and other public bodies. This is an important distinction when deciding where to send your request.

If you want a police report, an arrest record created by a law enforcement agency, or other non-court records, use FOIA. For court filings, case files, docket entries, and judicial orders, contact the Ionia County Clerk. The county's FOIA page at ioniacounty.org/foia/ covers how to make FOIA requests for county agency records. Agencies must respond within five business days under MCL 15.231, and criminal history records as defined in MCL 28.241a are available through ICHAT rather than the courts.
